Mason Williams making the most of early opportunity at Kentucky

Although it is only exhibition season in college basketball, 4-star freshman guard Mason Williams has impressed in Kentucky Basketball’s first two exhibition games.

On Friday night, Williams scored 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field and 2-of-4 from 3-point range, adding two rebounds in 27 minutes during Kentucky’s 76-65 win over Texas Tech inside Rupp Arena.

In Kentucky’s previous exhibition against Little Rock, Williams finished with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field and 1-of-1 from the 3-point range. He also recorded two rebounds, three assists and four steals.

Williams’ performances have caught the attention of opposing coaches, too. Texas Tech head coach Grant McCasland praised the freshman’s confidence, energy, and ability to make an impact during Friday night’s matchup.

“We were getting back in it, and he made a big three. You could tell he was excited to compete too. Wasn’t backing down. I mean, those are things, you know, you’re coming out of a timeout, and you’re going into a timeout, and he’s vocal about the success that they’re having, and I loved his energy and thought he was a difference maker in the minutes that he played.”

Kentucky head coach Mark Pope also recognizes that the Wildcats will need Williams’ production this season, especially with backup guard Jerone Morton sidelined after suffering a significant setback following a knee reinjury.

Pope emphasized that Williams will need to take on a larger role with Kentucky currently limited in the backcourt.

“Mase is in a space where our health as a team, he has to play. He’s going to have to play 24 minutes a game, 26 minutes a game. We only have three guards really to fill two positions right now.”

With two strong performances to begin his college career, Williams is making the most of his opportunity. If he can continue producing at this level, the freshman guard could become an important piece of Kentucky’s rotation as the regular season approaches.
