The Duke Chronicle has its first profile of a new men’s basketball player up, and it’s of Belmont transfer Drew Scharnowski.
Chronicle sports writer Ryan Hamner makes the obvious comparison to Maliq Brown, and to be sure, Scharnowski will take on some of his responsibilities.
But they are not the same players. Brown is a defensive savant. Scharnowski is an excellent defender, but he’s probably a more well-rounded player. At 6-10 and 240 pounds, he’s also a good bit stronger than Brown is, too.
Like Brown, Scharnowski is an excellent passer, but physically, he’s more dynamic.
As Jon Rothstein said in the video we linked Monday, Scharnowski is making a huge impression on the coaching staff, and apparently exceeding expectations. Depth is going to be one of Duke’s major strengths this season, and it may be even better than expected.
