The CBS studio crew took a deep dive into history this week, turning the Field of 64 into a data-driven exercise on what it actually takes to win the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
Led by Adam Zuker, the panel sifted through decades of champions, identifying trends that separate legitimate contenders from the others. The exercise quickly narrowed the field, as several long-standing facts eliminated a number of teams.
Among the clearest disqualifiers where no national champion has entered the tournament after losing three of its last four games. Teams like UCF and Missouri fell into that category, effectively popping their title bubbles. Similarly, no champion has endured a five-game losing streak at any point in the season, another strike against several mid-tier contenders.
The panel also stated that no champion has gone an entire season unranked in the AP Top 25 poll. That removed additional teams from consideration, reinforcing the importance of sustained national relevance.
How a team performed in its conference tournament mattered as well. No champion in modern history exiting before the semifinal round. That's bad news for programs like Illinois.
Seeding history provided another firm line in the sand. No team seeded ninth or lower has ever won the tournament. While exceptions like Villanova as an eight seed exist, the data overwhelmingly favors higher-seeded teams.

From there, the discussion shifted to trends rather than absolutes. Most recent champions have produced a winning streak of at least six games during the season, showing the importance of peaking at the right time. Additionally, 30 of the last 31 champions avoided a loss of 25 points or more.
By the end of the segment, the field had been trimmed to seven true contenders. Duke, Arizona, Michigan, Houston, Iowa State, UConn and Purdue were left standing.
This is bad news for Florida, who looks to defend their championship. As the crew noted, history doesn’t guarantee outcomes, but it does offer a revealing blueprint. Ernie Johnson led the crew last year with the same exercise and the Gator were one of five.
