Duke fans (yes, we’re speaking for all of us) can understand why players like Christian Laettner and JJ Redick got on people’s nerves. Guys like that would get on our nerves too if Duke had to play against them.
But fortunately, Duke never had to do that, and we loved them both.
Both of them were arrogant, cocky bastards, but unlike a lot of arrogant, cocky bastards, they could absolutely dominate a game. And while Laettner was a 6-11 beast who might have walked off the pages of GQ magazine, Redick, much shorter at 6-4, was much more of an everyman – except for one thing.
That arm. That absolutely golden arm.
Redick scored 2,769 points in his Duke career, and hit 457 threes. He was hated around college basketball, and when they gave it to him, he gave it right back on the court – and then he would talk smack to the crowd.
Duke fans ate it up, especially when he torched UNC in 2006, scoring 35 points in an 87-83 win.
Basically, he was ridiculous. Basically, he was unstoppable. Watch as he hits off-balance shots. Watch as he totally discombobulates defenders. Watch as he does anything he pleases.
Redick did this to just about any team Duke faced. He had an incredible career as a Blue Devil.
