Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell have arguably been the WNBA’s best duo this season. They have racked up multiple high-scoring games between them, helping the Indiana Fever qualify for the playoffs and making them a strong contender to go all the way.
They have combined for an astonishing 516 points over a 10-game stretch, which is the most by any duo in WNBA history. In doing so, they both have also scored 30 or more points in the same game three times, another league record.
The Fever stars are both in the running to win the MVP award this season. Picking one out of the two might be like splitting hairs for the Indiana faithful. However, Fever star Ty Harris presented an unusual idea to give co-MVP awards to Clark and Mitchell. This had fans talking on Thursday.
“This is what everyone on the team should be saying to the public. Good job Ty!!!” one fan said.
“We’re going to be ecstatic. I think they deserve it. Both of them. I mean, nobody wants to be co [MVP], but hey, I’m going to throw it out there. It’s hard for them. So, it’ll be amazing just to have them ’cause they definitely do deserve it,” Harris said.
Clark is averaging 22.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 8.3 assists, while Mitchell is averaging 24.8 ppg, 1.7 rpg and 2.8 apg.
Can Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell actually become co-MVP?
The only WNBA award to have co-winners was the Defensive Player of the Year last season. The Las Vegas Aces’ A’ja Wilson shared the award with Minnesota Lynx forward Alanna Smith. In the NBA, the only award to have co-winners has been the Rookie of the Year.
The WNBA has never had a tie in MVP voting as it is mathematically highly unlikely. The point system is specifically divided to avoid a tie:
- 10 points for first place
- 7 points for second place
- 5 points for third place
- 3 points for fourth place
- 1 point for fifth place
If an unlikely tie did ever occur, it is resolved by comparing the number of first-place votes each player has received, then calculating the second-place votes, so on and so forth.
