Washington basketball guard gets fifth season approved in courts

Washington's first basketball practice open to the media came with an extra surprise on Tuesday.

When practice wrapped, Nevada transfer Tayshawn Comer found out that he had received a temporary injunction in his legal case for a fifth season of eligibility, making him immediately eligible just before the season officially starts. Word spread quickly throughout the team, who had been meeting with their position groups, and the entire roster mobbed Comer in celebration.

A Huskies spokesman confirmed to the media after the scene that Comer had received his injunction, subject to NCAA appeal.

The decision comes as part of Glancey v. NCAA, which covers 76 college basketball players who graduated high school in 2022. Former Washington women's basketball guard Hannah Stines, who is in the transfer portal, is also among the players granted a year of eligibility by Tuesday's decision.

Comer played two seasons at Eastern Kentucky, one at Evansville, and one at Nevada before transferring to Washington, which had a roster spot open because the program learned that Croatian national Boris Tišma was not going to win his bid for NCAA eligibility. (Tišma later signed with Movistar Estudiantes of Primera FEB, the second division of Spanish basketball.) He averaged 11 points and 3.6 assists per game in 36 starts for Nevada last season and had been working as one of Washington's primary ball-handlers in the practice open to media Tuesday.

"I've been taking it day by day, just focusing on the season," Comer said after practice. "I really haven't been thinking about the eligibility. I knew it was out of my hands. Just leave it up to my lawyer and let him do what he has to do."

"I had a few options hitting the portal for my fifth year, but talking with Coach (Danny) Sprinkle, talking to Coach (DeAndre Haynes), he recruited me at Marquette. But once he got here, he started recruiting me, and we just built from there," Comer said when asked what made him choose Washington.

Comer started Washington's exhibition against Boise State and led the team in minutes with 33:45 of court time. He and Texas Tech transfer LeJuan Watts led the team in scoring with 16 each, 10 of which came on free throws from Comer. He also had 3 assists, 1 rebound, and made both of his threes while operating the offense.

Comer's injunction means the Huskies will have their full 15-man roster available for an exhibition against Washington State on Sunday and their season opener against Colgate on November 2. Only San Francisco transfer Ryan Beasley and walk-on BJ Roy did not play against Boise State, which means the Huskies are in good health coming into the season as well, after struggling with injuries last season.
