Syracuse basketball landed a major recruiting commitment Friday when 2027 five-star forward Moussa Kamissoko announced his decision to join the Orange. The commitment makes Kamissoko the first five-star recruit of head coach Gerry McNamara’s tenure and only the second five-star prospect to choose Syracuse in the past decade, following Donnie Freeman in 2024.
Kamissoko, who is originally from the Bronx, currently attends SPIRE Academy in Geneva, Ohio. The 6-foot-7, 180-pound forward previously played at Long Island Lutheran and Trinity-Pawling in New York. He said his desire to play college basketball near home was an important factor in his decision, while his Sept. 3-4 visit to Syracuse and McNamara’s plans for using him in the Orange system also influenced his choice.
The New York prospect had an extensive list of suitors. His finalists included Florida State, Virginia, Illinois, Oklahoma State, BYU, Baylor and UConn, while he also held offers from programs such as Kentucky, Alabama, Louisville, Cincinnati, Providence, NC State and Penn State. He had already visited Illinois, BYU, Florida State, Virginia and Oklahoma State, with additional visits to UConn, Baylor and Louisville planned before he ended his recruitment.

Kamissoko is ranked inside the national top 20 by every major recruiting service. Rivals lists him No. 7 overall in the 2027 class, ESPN has him No. 18, while 247Sports composite ranks him No. 14 nationally and No. 5 among small forwards. He is also listed as the No. 2 power forward by SC Next 100.
Playing with PSA Cardinals on the Nike EYBL circuit this past year, Kamissoko averaged 16.3 points and 7.2 rebounds across 18 games while shooting above 35% from three-point range. At Nike Peach Jam, he recorded 16.6 points and 9.4 rebounds per game, with his rebounding average ranking sixth overall. At the NBPA Top 100 camp, he averaged 15.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists.
Kamissoko becomes McNamara’s first big recruiting commitment after the Orange hired him in March. McNamara previously spent 15 seasons as a Syracuse assistant and played on the Orange’s 2003 national championship team. He also led Siena to the NCAA tournament last season.

The commitment is Syracuse’s second in the 2027 class, joining three-star 6-foot-8 forward Jack Donohue, who committed in August.
