The NCAA is at it again — they are currently weighing new eligibility rules that would allow student-athletes five years of eligibility. Should this be written into “law,” UNC’s Seth Trimble could return to Chapel Hill for a fifth year of college basketball. In fact, he entered the transfer portal on Monday afternoon with a do not contact tag, which is a move that he made to keep other schools from contacting him while he weighs out his future.
Right now Trimble is preparing for the NBA, but he is very much leaving a return to UNC on the table. here is what he told 247Sports about his recent move:
“I’m full focused on the NBA process right now but definitely would consider that if that becomes a reality,” Trimble said. “Carolina is always home, so (I) would absolutely consider that.”
Here’s the thing: Michael Malone has been working really hard to fill out his roster, while I’m sure there’s been some communication with Trimble and/or his camp about this, it must be acknowledged that there’s a decent chance that everything moves on without him. Does Malone pull the trigger on him if he does want to return, though? Does that mess up his plans for the roster, or does that help him? Also, what does the financial situation look like if this happens?
The Seth Trimble situation is just one of many that will come about over the coming weeks. Players that aren’t favorites to hear their name called on draft night may just return to the college ranks if the NCAA makes the five-year rule official. But we all have to ask: does anybody actually want this? I’m sure there are Carolina fans that would love for Trimble to come back, but do college basketball fans as a whole want five-year eligibility, or is the NCAA doing too much again?
Feel free to let us know in the comments below if you are for or against this new change, and why. I would love to hear what all of you have to say.
