Here are three takeaways, followed by the schedule.
1. An enormous week at home
It’s a decibel-meter week when the Scarlet Knights host defending national champ Michigan in the Big Ten home opener on Wednesday, Dec. 9 and then welcome neighborhood rival Seton Hall on Saturday, Dec. 12. Michigan has talent but lost a good deal to the NBA, including head coach Dusty May. Most of Seton Hall’s roster turned over after last year’s 21-win campaign, but the Pirates could be a middle-of-the-pack Big East squad.
2. The Big Ten didn't shaft Rutgers for once
The first six conference games are all against opponents projected to finish in the top half of the league, and as usual, the two December contests (at Indiana and home vs. Michigan) are a meat grinder. That said, four of those first six are at home, and Rutgers will enjoy an early three-game homestand Jan. 5-12 against UCLA, USC and Iowa. USC, which projects to be borderline Top-25, will be on the back end of its East Coast swing and thus vulnerable.
Of the 10 conference home dates, three are on Saturday, one on Friday and one on Sunday. That bodes pretty well from an attendance standpoint.
3. A solid non-conference schedule
Rutgers is facing at least four high-majors, three of them on neutral courts. That’s decent resume material. And the program will get an infusion of roster-budget money from a third straight appearance in the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas.
Opening with three low-majors at home makes sense as the newcomers figure out their roles. It’s also always nice to see Jersey on the schedule with NJIT, Saint Peter’s and the Hall visiting Piscataway.
