The Houston Rockets have been presented with a blockbuster trade idea that would send Kevin Durant to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Joel Embiid.
The hypothetical three-player deal would see Durant and Clint Capela head to Philadelphia, while Houston would receive Embiid and second-round picks in 2027 and 2032.
It comes just one year after the Rockets pulled off one of the biggest trades in franchise history, acquiring Durant from the Phoenix Suns.
The 37-year-old arrived in Houston as a 16-time All-Star and 12-time All-NBA performer after spending two seasons in Phoenix.
Houston has since put together another notable offseason, although its playoff defeat to a short-handed Los Angeles Lakers side took some shine off the progress made.
ESPN’s Zach Kram still described the Rockets as having enjoyed another solid offseason, while highlighting the additions of Marcus Smart and the re-signing of Jae’Sean Tate on a team-friendly deal.
Joel Embiid trade would give Rockets a different superstar
The proposed move would completely change Houston’s frontcourt.
Embiid would join Alperen Sengun and Steven Adams, giving the Rockets what the proposal describes as perhaps the best frontcourt in the NBA. Philadelphia, meanwhile, would land Durant alongside Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Maxey and LeBron James.
There is also an obvious age argument behind the hypothetical deal.
Embiid is five years younger than Durant, potentially giving Houston a longer window to compete for a championship if the former MVP can stay healthy.
The idea would also allow younger Rockets players such as Reed Sheppard, Jabari Smith Jr. and Sengun to return to the style they had begun developing during the 2024-25 season.
For now, there is no indication that Houston is actively looking to move Durant. The Rockets are instead heading into the 2026-27 season hoping for a healthier roster.
Still, if the season does not go to plan by the trade deadline, Durant’s history of being moved during the season means this hypothetical could become a conversation worth watching.
