Brad Underwood has never shied away from loading up on elite non-conference opponents, and 2026 is no exception. Facing one of the most intriguing slates of games in the country, the Illini have a gauntlet ahead of them that’s designed to prepare this team for another deep run in March. It’s been years since a non-conference schedule has generated this much buzz. Let’s break down the excitement and rank every matchup by its hype level.
Tier 1: Fri, Dec 4: UConn (United Center, Chicago)
Illinois hasn’t beaten UConn in nearly a century. While it’s not an ancient rivalry, Illini fans certainly have a sour taste in their mouths regarding Dan Hurley and the Huskies. The infamous 30-0 run that shattered Illinois’ Elite Eight run in 2024, followed by another postseason loss in the 2026 Final Four, has fueled an intense hunger for revenge in Champaign. Meeting at a neutral site like Chicago’s United Center should tilt the crowd heavily toward the Orange and Blue.

Nationally, this is tracking as an early game-of-the-year candidate, bringing two projected preseason Top 5 teams to the United Center for the first time since 2013. UConn will still boast an elite lineup despite losing first-rounders Tarris Reed Jr. and Alex Karaban to the 2026 NBA Draft. The Huskies will be somewhat shorthanded, with veteran guard Solo Ball expected to miss the season following wrist surgery. Still, they retain Silas Demary Jr. and dynamic sophomore Braylon Mullins alongside a highly touted transfer class. If the Illini want to prove they belong in college basketball’s absolute top tier, dethroning the Huskies on the big stage is the statement that the fans and players both need.
Tier 2: Tue, Nov 17: at Duke
There is no bigger litmus test in college basketball than taking a trip to Cameron Indoor Stadium. The last time Illinois traveled to Durham was in 2020, walking out with a dominant 15-point victory. They’ll try to capture that feeling again this winter, but they’ll be facing a much tougher Blue Devils squad in an environment that remains the best in the country.
Making matters tougher, the Illini aren’t the only program returning immense talent. Duke brings back three primary starters from a team that narrowly lost to UConn in the Elite Eight in senior leader Caleb Foster, sophomore Dame Sarr, and Patrick Ngongba II, alongside key guard Cayden Boozer. When Illinois steps back into Cameron, they won’t be playing a disjointed group of freshmen like they did in 2020. This is arguably the most talented and experienced roster in the country, spearheaded by Jon Scheyer.
Tier 3: Sun, Dec 20: Missouri (Enterprise Center, St. Louis ) and Sat, Jan 30: North Carolina (Bridgestone Arena, Nashville)

Braggin’ Rights is always the most anticipated rivalry matchup on the schedule. Missouri fans are also desperate for a win, as they just suffered the most lopsided loss in the rivalries history. However, they are in a great spot to change the narrative. Dennis Gates has done a great job re-vamping his roster as the tigers will surely enter the regular season ranked. They also hauled in one of the best recruiting classes in the country, spearheaded by top-5 nationally ranked player Jason Crowe Jr. For Illinois, they look to build on the success of years prior as they’re looking to win their fourth straight in the series. Braggin’ Rights is always a 50/50 split arena that plays more like a March madness environment than a mid-December non-conference game. With a reloaded Mizzou team looking to not copy last year’s blowout, this year’s rivalry looks better than it has in a long time.
llini fans will never forget the 2005 National Championship game, which is why the matchup vs North Carolina is going to gather so much intrigue. After that meeting, it’s been almost 20 years since these schools have met again. The biggest storyline for the Tar Heels this offseason has been the addition of head coach Mike Malone alongside star transfer Milan Momcilovic. Both teams will be stepping out of conference play for this matchup, which ensures no early season rust is present. The Illini have had success in Nashville, beating Tennessee last year, and will look to do the same to the Tar Heels just a month before March begins.
Tier 4: Tue, Nov 10: at Texas Tech
When the Illini and Red Raiders meet, it will be a rematch of last November’s game in Champaign, where Illinois escaped with a narrow four-point victory. The biggest storyline of the offseason for Texas Tech has been the status of forward JT Toppin following a torn ACL in February. The program announced that Toppin is indeed planning to suit up this season, adding an large layer of intrigue to the matchup. Pair his return with the fact that former Illini guard and UNLV transfer Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn is now spearheading Texas Tech’s backcourt, and this game is filled with storylines. The Red Raiders will force the Illini to prove they can win a physical battle against a disciplined high-major opponent.
Tier 5: Thu, Nov 5: Penn (State Farm Center)
Former Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery will make his long-awaited return to Champaign on Nov. 5. The dynamic between Brad Underwood and McCaffery alone will draw a crowd, but the talent on this Penn roster cannot be overlooked. Following a 35-point blowout victory by the Illini in the first round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament, the Quakers are out for redemption.
They are led by star forward TJ Power, a former five-star recruit who returned to Penn for his senior campaign after earning First-Team All-Ivy honors while leading the team in both scoring and rebounding. Ivy League schools are notoriously dangerous non-conference opponents, and McCaffery has quickly turned the Quakers into one of the best mid-major teams in the country.
Tier 6:
- Mon, Nov 2: Fairleigh Dickinson (Opening Night – State Farm Center)
- Fri, Nov 13: Sam Houston State (State Farm Center)
- Fri, Nov 20: Eastern Illinois (State Farm Center)
- Mon, Nov 23: Winthrop (State Farm Center)
- Tue, Dec 29: Buy Game Opponent TBA (State Farm Center)
Illinois will still look to add two more non-conference games to the schedule before the season begins. However, with what is already locked into place, the Illini have put together one of the most intriguing, high-profile non-conference schedules in the entire country.
