Penn State basketball added another transfer to its newly-made roster, landing former Buffalo big man Tim Oboh.
Oboh is a 6-foot-11, 230-pound center who was a sophomore last season, meaning he should have two years left of eligibility. I say “should” because of the ever-changing eligibility rules in the NCAA, and the fact that Oboh is an international, having come over from England. Sometimes, the Euros’ eligibility gets out of whack, but we’ll presume Oboh will be a junior next season.
Oboh is coming off a sophomore season where he averaged 8.5 PPG (61.6% from the field), 4.9 RPG, and 1.5 BPG on 21.1 MPG. So yeah, not gaudy numbers, but he’s a bit more athletic and offers more bounce than someone like Ivan Juric, so Oboh works perfectly fine in the backup role. Plus, I think there might be some untapped upside here. Not to make a direct comparison, but Yanic Konan Niederhauser was also a European who spent two years in the MAC and didn’t have the loudest statline (7.3 PPG/4.4 RPG/2.1 BPG).
With the addition of Oboh, I think you’re looking at this as the depth chart:
1: Jay Rodgers — ?
2: Roberts Blums — Francois Wibaut
3: Brant Byers — ?
4: Roko Prkacin — Tibor Mirtic
5: Ivan Juric — Tim Oboh — Sasa Ciani
The the 4s and 5s are probably taken care of. In an ideal world, you get another wing and another guard, but I’m unsure if they have the funds to be true rotational players at both. Unless they really want to run the offense through Byers and Blums, I have to think another point guard is going to be the move. We’ll see though.
