Northwestern will have an early opportunity to make a statement on the national stage when it travels to Charleston, South Carolina, for the Shriners Children’s Charleston Classic in November.
The Wildcats now know when they will take the court, with Northwestern set to face Virginia Tech on Friday, Nov. 20, at 2 p.m. CT before taking on Dayton on Sunday, Nov. 22, at noon CT.
Both games will air on ESPN2, giving Northwestern two nationally televised opportunities to showcase its 2026-27 team. ESPN Events lists the six-team field as Northwestern, Virginia Tech, Dayton, Minnesota, Oklahoma State and Utah.
The Charleston Classic is an annual early-season college basketball event held at TD Arena in Charleston. The tournament gives teams an opportunity to play multiple nonconference games against quality competition in a neutral-site environment while also receiving exposure across ESPN platforms.
For Northwestern, the event also has some history.
The Wildcats last competed in the Charleston Classic in 2011, and they made the most of the opportunity. Northwestern defeated LSU 88-82 in the opening round, followed by a 69-65 victory over Tulsa and then defeated Seton Hall 80-73 in the championship game to win the tournament.
Drew Crawford was named tournament MVP after scoring 27 points in the championship, while John Shurna added 19 points and seven rebounds.
Now, 15 years later, Northwestern will return to Charleston with another chance to make an impact.
The Wildcats will face a difficult weekend. Virginia Tech and Dayton will provide two different challenges early in the season, forcing Northwestern to quickly learn how its roster responds when the competition level rises.
Playing away from Evanston and in a neutral-site setting will also give the team an opportunity to build chemistry and gain experience outside of its normal environment. The weekend could become especially important for Northwestern’s resume.
Early-season tournaments can provide teams with opportunities to collect quality wins before conference play begins. While it is impossible to know exactly how the teams will look by November, playing programs with strong expectations gives Northwestern a chance to build confidence and establish itself early.
The national television component makes the weekend even more significant.
Both games being shown on ESPN2 means Northwestern will have an audience beyond its normal fan base watching the Wildcats. For a team trying to establish itself as a legitimate contender, those games can serve as an early measuring stick.
There is also value beyond simply winning or losing.
Northwestern will get a chance to see how its new pieces fit together, how its offense handles pressure and how its defense responds when facing quality opponents. A strong performance in Charleston could provide momentum heading into the rest of the nonconference schedule.
The Wildcats also have the opportunity to create another memorable chapter in their history at the event.
Northwestern already knows what it feels like to leave Charleston as a champion. Now, the 2026-27 team will get the chance to write its own story.
With Virginia Tech and Dayton waiting in nationally televised games, the Charleston Classic could become one of Northwestern’s first major tests of the season and an early opportunity for the Wildcats to show where they belong.
