Will Michael Malone turn things around at UNC? He’s widely respected and, unlike a lot of NBA players or coaches who have moved to college ball, he’s put in his time on the recruiting trail.
He may well get it done. However, Tuesday was not a great argument for his ultimate success, as Charlotte came to Chapel Hill and nearly upset UNC in exhibition play.
In fact, the 49ers were up one with 16 seconds to play, when they made a classic mistake: like Chris Webber in the 1993 championship game, Charlotte called a timeout that it didn’t have.
UNC tied the game and won in overtime, 89-82.
Somewhat surprisingly, Charlotte out-rebounded UNC, 36-30. Terrence Brown scored 27 for the Tar Heels, while Neo Avdalas scored 16 and had 9 rebounds. He also led UNC with 5 assists.
Freshman big man Sayon Keita played 33 minutes, but only got 2 rebounds.
In fairness, Matt Able didn’t play, but we haven’t seen why.
UNC will probably be better later, but on Tuesday night, they were not impressive. UNC fans out in social media land were not impressed.
In a related note, TNT has hired former UNC coach Hubert Davis, and we think that’s great.
Davis was a tremendous talent for ESPN before he decided to sign on as a Roy Williams assistant. As things turned out, he was an erratic head coach, and, in our opinion, he wasn’t comfortable being in charge of the program or leading a team.
However, he’s charming and likable, and he’s going to do a great job for TNT, so congrats to him.
