The Husker women are part of the First Four in the NCAA tournament and take on the Richmond Spiders. This is the third straight tourney appearance for the Huskers – and also for Richmond. The Spiders are a perimter-focused team with two players that rank in the top-20 in the nation in three-pointers made; Rachel Ullstrom (12th) and Maggie Doogan (20th). They have taken 1899 field goals this season with 941 (nearly half!!) of them being from long range. They make 45.8% of their FGs and 37% of threes. They rank 7th in the nation in three-pointers attempted and 2nd in three-pointers made. The Spiders average 72.6 ppg and give up 59.0.
I generally consider the Huskers to be a team that likes to let it fly from behind the arc. They have taken 1848 shots from the field with 663 of those being from three (a little over a third of their shots). Nebraska has made 47.6% of their FGs and 35% of threes. Nationally, they rank in the low-50s for attempts and ~100th for makes. Nebraska averages 79.3 ppg and gives up 67.7.

Scouting the Richmond Spiders
Coach Aaron Roussell has built an outstanding program in his seven seasons at Richmond. The Spiders have won 26 or more games each of the past three years, including a 26-7 record this season. The Spiders were 28-7 last year, including 17-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, after going 29-6 overall and 16-2 in the A-10 in 2023-24.
Richmond earned a No. 8 seed in last year’s NCAA Tournament and defeated No. 9 Georgia Tech, 74-49, in Los Angeles, before falling to No. 1 UCLA, 84-67 in the second round. The Spiders were a No. 10 seed in the 2024 NCAA Tournament, falling to No. 7 seed Duke, 72-61 at Ohio State.
Two-time Atlantic 10 Player-of-the-Year Maggie Doogan leads Richmond as one of the nation’s most decorated players. A candidate for the Ann Meyers Drysdale, Tamika Catchings, Becky Hammon and Katrina McClain award watch lists. The 6-2 senior is averaging 21.0 points and 7.8 rebounds, while shooting 50.3 percent from the field, including 40.2 percent (88-219) from three-point range and nearly 90 percent (.892) from the free throw line.
Rachel Ullstrom has joined Doogan in the starting lineup for all 33 games. The 6-1 senior guard is averaging 14.2 points and 5.7 rebounds while shooting a team-best 41.3 percent from long range, including a team-best 92 threes. Ally Sweeney, a 5-6 junior, puts three Spiders in double figures with 10.5 points per game.
Alicia Newell also has been a regular starter for Richmond. The 5-9 sophomore is averaging 7.3 points and 3.6 rebounds while leading the Spiders with 59 steals (1.9 spg). Sam Dewey rounds out the Spider starting five. The 6-2 senior who transferred from Illinois is averaging 5.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.

Jill’s Thoughts and Predictions
One of the weaknesses of this year’s Husker team has been the interior, especially on defense. Fortunately for the Huskers, it doesn’t look like Richmond is terribly interested in playing in the paint. Richmond is a team that relies pretty heavily on their starters, but if you look closely at the bench, most are freshman with a sophomore and grad student. Nebraska’s depth may help them if it turns into a track meet.
The Huskers have some good defenders at guard, especially Callin Hake, Hailey Weaver and Britt Prince. They will need to keep the Spiders contained. We’ll also need the posts to take advantage of their opportunities in the paint. Amiah Hargrove and Jess Petrie can score if they have the opportunities. Nebraska is generally good at taking care of the ball and also pretty good at making one more pass to find the best shot. I think they will prove to be slightly more efficient than the Spiders, although I expect this game to be a nailbiter.
