Michigan basketball is suddenly searching for a new head coach after reports surfaced that Dusty May is finalizing a deal to become the next head coach of the Dallas Mavericks.
The timing is far from ideal for the Wolverines. May just delivered a national championship and appeared poised to keep Michigan among the nation’s elite programs for years to come.
Now athletic director Warde Manuel faces one of the most important hires in recent school history.
If Michigan wants a proven winner with Midwest roots, elite recruiting ability, and a track record of building championship-caliber programs, the answer seems obvious.
TJ Otzelberger.

Otzelberger Checks Every Box
Few coaches in college basketball have done a better job over the last five years than Iowa State’s head coach.
After inheriting a Cyclones program that won just two games during the COVID-shortened 2020-21 season, Otzelberger engineered one of the most impressive turnarounds in recent college basketball history. In his first season, Iowa State won 22 games and reached the Sweet 16. Since then, the Cyclones have become a perennial Top 10 program and one of the toughest teams in America.
His teams are known for their relentless defense, physical toughness, player development, and culture.
Those qualities would fit perfectly at Michigan.
A Proven Builder and Recruiter
Otzelberger’s success did not begin at Iowa State.
Before returning to Ames, he led South Dakota State to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances and later guided UNLV through a challenging rebuilding effort. Along the way, he developed a reputation as one of college basketball’s top recruiters and relationship builders.
At Iowa State, he has consistently landed impact transfers, developed overlooked talent, and elevated the program to national relevance.
His current record at Iowa State stands at 124-52, while his overall head coaching record is 223-115. Those numbers speak for themselves.
The Biggest Obstacle? Iowa State’s Commitment
Of course, landing Otzelberger would not be easy.
The 48-year-old recently signed a new contract extension that reportedly pays him $6 million annually and keeps him under contract through 2036. Iowa State has made it abundantly clear that it views him as the face of the program moving forward.
Otzelberger has also publicly shot down rumors linking him to other high-profile jobs in recent years, including North Carolina. Following speculation earlier this offseason, he reiterated his commitment to Iowa State.
That does not mean Michigan should not try.

Why Michigan Should Make the Call
National championship programs do not settle for safe hires.
Michigan is one of the premier jobs in college basketball, and replacing a coach who just won a national title requires an aggressive approach.
Otzelberger has proven he can rebuild programs, sustain success, recruit at a high level, and compete deep into March. He has reached three Sweet 16 appearances in five seasons at Iowa State and has transformed the Cyclones into a national contender.
If Michigan wants a coach capable of keeping the Wolverines among the sport’s elite, there may not be a better candidate available.
Whether Iowa State ultimately lets him leave is another question entirely.
But if Warde Manuel is building a dream list, TJ Otzelberger should be near the very top.
