Michigan State is coming off another successful season, making it to the NCAA Tournament for the 28th time in 29 years, with the only miss being the COVID-19 season. Michigan State would fall in the Sweet 16 to UConn, ending their season.
Now, the Spartans have lost a contributor to the team as they moved to the transfer portal at the last second, according to Pete Nakos of On3.
Michigan State guard Devine Ugochukwu has entered the College Basketball Transfer Portal with a do-not-contact tag. The sophomore guard entered just before the deadline to enter the portal on Tuesday night.
The 6’3″ guard started 12 games for the Spartans, and the team went 11-1 in those games. Overall, he would play in 22 games before an injury ended his season. Ugochukwu scored 5.1 points per game while adding 1.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists pr game. His best game came against Penn State in December, where he scored 23 points with three steals in 27 minutes of play.
This is the second time Ugochukwu has been in the transfer portal. In 2024-25, he played for Miami, starting 16 games and playing in 28. That year, he scored 5.3 points per game with 1.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists. He would leave Miami after just one season, spending this year at Michigan State.
Ugochukwu was projected to be a starter for the Spartans in 2026-27 alongside Jeremy Fears. Meanwhile, Kur Teng was projected to be a backup. Teng was one of the players who would not have been surprising to enter the portal, but now could be moving into a starting role. Further, Jasiah Jervis comes in and could see time as a freshman.
