There are currently three active Division I men’s basketball head coaches who have at least 850 career on-court wins. They are legends for a reason. Guys with the plaques in Springfield or will have one someday. Guys who have seen everything.

Mark Pope has faced all three of them this season. His record? 4-0.
And all three wins came as Kentucky has won 12 of 15 games after starting 5-4 following that blowout vs. Gonzaga that was arguably the worst defeat of the Mark Pope era.
The resume
It is one thing to beat the up-and-comers. It is another thing entirely to stare down the legends on the opposite sideline and out-coach them. Pope took down Rick Pitino and St. John’s in Catlanta after UCLA bowed out of the CBS Classic.
He went to Fayetteville and ruined Arkansas’ party, a year after Calipari did the same in Lexington. And now, he has swept Rick Barnes, winning in the hostile environment of Knoxville and surviving a fistfight in Lexington.
When Mark Pope was hired, the biggest question was whether he could recruit and coach at this elite level. Could he handle the bright lights? Could he match wits with the guys who have been doing this for 30 years?
I think we have our answer on the coaching part. He isn’t just competing with the legends. He is beating them.
On the recruiting part? Well, I would say incomplete for now.
