LAWRENCE, Kan. — The No. 9 Kansas Jayhawks put on an inspiring performance in their 82-78 win over No. 1 Arizona on Monday.
There’s not many times you hear about Kansas pulling off an upset at the daunting Allen Fieldhouse, but that certainly was the case on Big Monday, as they were without their best player Darryn Peterson against an undefeated Arizona team.
The freshman guard and likely top three pick was ruled out just prior to tip-off with flu-like symptoms.
Flory Bidunga picked up the scoring load in his absence, with a valiant 23 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks, including a game-sealing block on Brayden Burries in what may have been the best performance of Bidunga’s career.
Burries led the way for the Wildcats with 25 points and five rebounds.
Arizona led a majority of the game, building an 11-point lead early in the second half, but Kansas responded with with a 21-9 run, getting their first lead of the game on a Flory Bidunga dunk.
Kansas never trailed the rest of the way, securing an 82-78 victory and their first ever win over a No. 1 team in Allen Fieldhouse.
Bill Self also moves to 39-0 on Big Monday at Allen Fieldhouse. With the win, Kansas sits at 19-2 overall and 9-5 in the conference.
They have another tough matchup on Saturday, when they face No. 5 Iowa State on the road.
