AMES, Iowa — Kansas basketball had Darryn Peterson available Saturday, Feb. 14, on the road against Iowa State, but his presence didn’t lead to a win as instead the Jayhawks suffered a 74-56 defeat.
No. 9 KU (19-6, 9-3 in Big 12) saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end with this loss at No. 4 Iowa State (22-3, 9-3). The Cyclones struggled to get going early in the first half, before taking control and going into halftime with a 10-point lead. In the second half, Iowa State got off to a fast start and held off any comeback attempts on the way to a 18-point victory.
Peterson, in his return, finished with 10 points but no rebounds or assists, as the freshman also struggled to hit shots consistently from the field and also turned the ball over three times. KU sophomore Flory Bidunga had another double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds, and senior Melvin Council Jr. had 15 points, five rebounds and four assists — to go along with four turnovers. Iowa State led by as many as 24 points in the second half.
Now, Kansas looks ahead to a game this upcoming Wednesday on the road against Oklahoma State. It’s a matchup the Jayhawks should be favored in, but not one they can overlook this season. As KU has experienced so far this season during Big 12 play, it’s difficult to win on the road in this conference.
