Purdue vs Gonzaga College Basketball Preview

The 2026-27 Purdue Boilermakers are going to be an interesting bunch, as they have lost several key stars who have led this program over the last few years, most notably Braden Smith, Fletcher Loyer, Trey Kaufman-Renn and Oscar Cluff.

That’s a lot of production and experience to replace heading into the new season.

Now, head coach Matt Painter has to figure out what he has, as 10 guys are fighting for a starting job. Painter has stated that he has plenty of options, but only one player has really started, and he is still trying to figure things out. As the cool kids would say, yikers.

However, returning starter C.J. Cox should take the next step as the team’s next sharpshooting guard with Smith gone. Cox has maintained a 3-point percentage above 38% in each of his first two seasons with the program.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Painter handles this new era of Purdue hoops.

Another year, another preseason filled with high hopes and plenty of hype surrounding the Gonzaga Bulldogs.

In the program’s first season playing in the Pac-12, Mark Few has done it again, assembling a top-ranked frontcourt featuring Braden Huff and Massamba Diop. Those two will be massive interior scoring threats for the Bulldogs.

Last season, the Bulldogs ranked 212th in 3-point percentage, shooting just 33.3% from deep. That was the worst 3-point percentage of Few’s coaching tenure.

Few addressed that weakness by bringing in former Clemson and Florida State sharpshooter Chauncey Wiggins, who has averaged 37.5% from deep throughout his college career. Wiggins is currently ineligible, but the hope is that he’ll play at some point this season.

Gonzaga also landed top-50 recruit Luca Foster, who could develop into a lethal 3-point shooter.

Regardless of which conference the Bulldogs play in, Few is going to assemble a well-rounded roster that should always give Gonzaga a chance to make a deep tournament run.

The Bulldogs drive me insane every year. They look like one of the most complete teams in the country, with talent peppered throughout their roster, only to lose to a team they have no business losing to and crush their hopes of being a legitimate national title contender.

However, maybe joining the Pac-12 will help turn things around and make this program more battle-tested as it gears up for another trip to the Big Dance.

One thing you can always trust with Gonzaga is its performance in early-season marquee matchups. Head coach Mark Few always has his guys prepared and ready to kick off the season on a high note.

Just look at last year, when the Bulldogs beat Oklahoma by 15. The year before that, they took down Baylor by nearly 40, following a 15-point win over Yale the season prior. Few is a master motivator when November rolls around.

Purdue, on the other hand, enters the season without much of the key talent that has carried this program over the last few seasons. With 10 guys clawing and scratching for minutes, head coach Matt Painter has his hands full early on.

Trust the team with the proven track record and a top-five frontcourt. Go Dawgs!

Pick: Gonzaga -5.5
