The Indiana Hoosiers made a slow start against the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday. Curt Cignetti’s team trailed 10-3 at the end of the first quarter. Nebraska wide receiver Nyziah Hunter rushed for a 10-yard score with about a minute left in the quarter, putting his team on top.
Many have downplayed Indiana’s unbeaten 5-0 start, saying the Hoosiers have faced weak opponents early in the season. CFB analyst Brandon Walker added to the narrative by trolling Cignetti for Indiana’s slow start against the Cornhuskers.
“If this keeps up in Lincoln, Cignetti is gonna cancel the second half and schedule Eastern Kentucky,” Walker wrote on X.
Indiana, the defending national champion, opened against North Texas, Howard and Western Kentucky before facing Northwestern and beginning Big Ten road play. Indiana only had to sweat in the 29-23 win over Northwestern.
Analyst Blames Indiana HC Curt Cignetti For Underwhelming Non-Conference Schedule
Compared to fellow national championship contenders like Ohio State, Michigan, Texas and Alabama, none of Indiana’s non-conference games have been scheduled against major opponents. They dismissed future non-conference series against Notre Dame and replaced them with lower-ranked teams.
This didn’t please Barstool Sports’ Brandon Walker, who called out Curt Cignetti.
“Curt Cignetti loves to be boisterous… and he loves to say Google me I win, but then when it comes time to act like they’re the big dog in college football, they run from competition,” Walker said.
Cignetti has also addressed criticism of Indiana’s schedule this season.
“We figured we would just adopt SEC scheduling philosophy,” Cignetti said via Fox Sports during Big 10 Media Days. “Some people don’t like it. I’m more focused on those nine conference games.”
Cignetti, who won the national championship with the Hoosiers in just his second year, has no plans to add tougher opponents to their non-conference schedule anytime soon.
