One of the real downsides of the modern era of college basketball, at least for fans, is that players who might have stuck around for four years often leave after just one or two.
That was the case with both Darren Harris and Jaden Schutt.
Harris left after two years in Durham last spring and is now an Indiana Hoosier. Schutt left Duke after two years, the second of which he redshirted due to injury.
Harris is making an impression with the Hoosiers, who are representing Team USA in the FISU America Games. He had 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists vs. Chile, and coach Darian DeVries seems happy with his new wing: “He’s one of those guys when he gets on a heater, it’s special,” DeVries said about Harris.
Harris has never had a problem shooting. His problem at Duke was just a lot of other good players ahead of him. If he plays with the sort of intensity we saw from him at times as a Blue Devil, he’ll be just fine. As college basketball fans, we’d like to see Indiana become a factor again, and it would be great if he could help with that.
As for Schutt, he’s settling in at Kansas State, where Casey Alexander is in his first season. Schutt is now an experienced guard who had some real solid games for Virginia Tech, and he seems excited about being a K-State Wildcat: “It’s been great here so far. Really loved it, and just in the process of choosing a new school, just once Casey kind of reached out, obviously just understanding his background, his success that he’s had with players, and just the way he plays just was really intriguing, and just wanted to be a part of it.
“Obviously, knowing it’s going to be a new group, yeah, and just know things, just the area. Come back to the Midwest, got a lot of family in Nebraska, so just you know, it kind of just feels like home right here. So that’s been great so far.”
Alexander has built a solid career with stops at Stetson, Lipscomb, and most recently Belmont, where he built a 166-60 record. It seems like a great situation for Schutt, since Belmont, under Rick Byrd and Casey, really embraced the three-point shot, and that’s Schutt’s calling card.
