ESPN sadly confirmed that announcer Chris Spatola, a former Army basketball star and the son-in-law of Duke legend Mike Krzyzewski, has passed away at the age of 47.
Spatola died unexpectedly this year, per ESPN’s press release. He’s been with the network since 2015, providing in-game commentary. Not only was he considered a standout on Army’s basketball team (No. 10 all-time in career points), he served from 2002 to 2007.
“Chris Spatola brought a unique perspective to ESPN’s college basketball coverage, shaped by his experiences as a student-athlete, Army veteran, coach and broadcaster,” ESPN said in a statement. “He was thoughtful, prepared and passionate about the sport, earning the respect of colleagues, coaches, players and fans alike. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones during this difficult time.”
After the news of Spatola’s death was confirmed, fans offered their condolences to Coach K and his family.
“What?!?! Awful. Prayers for Coach K and all the family,” one person said in response to this tragic news.
“He seemed like a genuine guy and one of the good ones,” a second person commented. “Always loved to hear his insight when he was on your shows. Sending my condolences to his family and Coach K.”
“It’s so sad to hear that Chris Spatola passed away. He was the husband of Mike “Coach K” Krzyzewski’s youngest daughter Jamie. Prayers for the Krzyzewski and Spatola families,” another person wrote on X.
“So sad to see this news. Loves listening to Chris. Thoughts and prayers with the Spatola and Coach K families,” a social media user added.

Spatola, who married Coach K’s daughter Jamie, was an assistant for the Blue Devils from 2007-2012.
“Jamie (Spatola) and I’s romantic story is a lot like Coach (Mike Krzyzewski) & Mickie (Krzyzewski’s) story,” Spatola said. “I think coach knew if I was able to make it through West Point then there’s gotta be a part of me that’s probably capable enough to date his daughter.”
