The Mercer Bears baseball team recently learned its NCAA tournament fate, and unfortunately, it wasn’t good news for fans and players. The decision-making committee overlooked the Bears despite their impressive 44-15 record this season. This omission highlights concerns about the judgment and decision-making ability of the officials responsible for tournament scheduling and rankings.

The Bears’ athletic director, Jim Cole, who had previously served on the NCAA baseball committee, lashed out at the selection process and even criticized the decision-making body as being highly political. “The message from friends progressed from ‘Mercer is [in]…’ to ‘I’ll put in a good word, but I’m only one vote.’ “I have been in those rooms before, and I know what happened. This was politics 101,” Cole said.

Fans were quick to share their reactions to the latest developments regarding the Bears being snubbed from the NCAA tourney and a former committee member acting as a pure whistleblower in the situation.

“This happened to us, Wofford, in 2022. It’s the same thing every year, unfortunately. No surprise,” one fan commented.

“End the corruption and monopolization of D1 college athletics; save college athletics,” another fan commented.

“Oof. This is CRAZY to say publicly as the AD of the snubbed school. Also, though, good for him if it’s completely true. But how do you trust it?” yet another fan commented.

Other fans directed scathing remarks at the decision-making committee, with one even pointing out the struggles mid-major schools face in securing valuable recognition for the tournament.

“These selection committees do this shit every year and then act like we are all stupid and don’t know,” one fan commented.

“Two things can be simultaneously true. The SEC can be the best conference. The 12th-place finish out of 16 SEC teams did not do enough, regardless of how great their conference is, to make the tournament. How much more can a midmajor do? They are 31 games over .500 with a top 30 RPI,” another fan commented.

“The worst part of this was having Mercer in the locker room on the screen during the selection show. The assumption would be that they were in. That’s just cruel at that point. No need to do that,” yet another fan commented.

Was Mercer the Only Credible Mid-Major School Snubbed?

Mercer wasn’t the only team with a strong case; UTSA, Kent State, and High Point also had compelling arguments for inclusion. In contrast, it was surprising that Kentucky, Virginia Tech, and NC State all made it, given that most expected only some of the previously mentioned teams. Meanwhile, Conference USA didn’t get a single two-seed; Liberty, Jacksonville State, and Missouri State all landed as three-seeds. Specifically, the Gamecocks were on the bubble and received a lower seed, which put them in the bracket. Just eight mid-major programs received at-large bids. Two of those were Washington State and Oregon State, which recently left the Pac-12 and are often seen as power schools. The remaining 27 spots went to the P4. Also read:
