Duke Basketball had Media Day Thursday, and Jon Scheyer’s opening comments are below.

“Uh, first I just want to touch on, um, you know, we’ve lost a great member of our Duke family the last couple days. And uh, if I’ve been fortunate… Chris Spatola came to Duke the year that I was a freshman. So I’ve known Chris for about 20 years. And uh, he’s… I think if you asked anybody over the last 20 years that’s touched our program, they’d tell you what a smart… he’s brilliant actually… what a smart, funny, charismatic person that Chris was.
“And for me, I’m heartbroken for our Duke family and obviously most importantly his family and the Krzyzewski family… the Spatola family.
“Chris was the guy after we lost to Villanova in the Sweet 16. He hugged me and told me “we’ll be back and we’re going to win the whole thing,” which we did the following year. He’s the guy that texted me when it was announced I was the next Duke head coach that “I’m built for this.” He’s the guy that’s come every preseason to watch a practice. And afterwards I always look forward to just… unsolicited… me and him would just always talk about, you know, just concerns he saw for the team, what really surprised him and impressed him. And I always loved and looked forward to those conversations preseason.
“So most importantly, everybody associated with our program… our hearts and minds are on Jamie and the kids, Coach K, his entire family, and obviously the amazing person that Chris was. So I just want to say that.
“As far as our team, you know, I’m incredibly excited to get going with this group. It’s been built on nothing being promised to any of these guys when they came back or came in. It’s built on how to continue to evolve with our program and where we need to go. And a big focus for us has been the 98%… it’s all the ways you impact the game without the ball. And that’s been a big thing for us.
“I’m sure you’ll talk to our guys if you haven’t already. We got a great group, great character, and I think we can have good depth, but depth means nothing if you don’t sacrifice and you don’t have the connectedness. So that’s what we’re focused on and I’m happy to answer any questions.”
