There are a lot of ways you can describe this Kentucky Basketball team.
Talented.
Flawed.
Shorthanded.
Streaky.
And honestly, that last one is probably the most accurate.
Because this hasn’t been a team that just rolls through people. At times, it’s looked really good. At other times, it’s completely stalled out, especially offensively.
And when that happens, it usually comes down to one question:
Who’s going to make a play?
More often than not, that answer has been Collin Chandler.
A year ago, this didn’t feel like where things were headed.
Coming off a two-year mission, Chandler was still working his way back. The minutes weren’t always there, and the role wasn’t always clear.
Then the NCAA Tournament hit, injuries forced Kentucky to adjust, and Chandler got his chance.
He stepped in and delivered.
It wasn’t a breakout.
But it was a sign.
This season, he was expected to take a step forward.
Few expected him to become this important.
Because once again, injuries have shaped Kentucky’s rotation, and Chandler has been right in the middle of it.
Only this time, it hasn’t just been about filling minutes.
It’s been about moments.
At one point this season, Chandler was leading the conference in three-point shooting percentage.
But this isn’t just about shooting.
Because Kentucky has been inconsistent, and Chandler has, too. There are games where he’s quiet.
That’s what makes him the X-factor.
You don’t always know what you’re going to get.
But when Kentucky wins the games that matter most, he shows up.
Think about the moments.
The 3 against Tennessee on the night honoring the 1996 team.
The steal on the road at Tennessee.
The shot at South Carolina.
Five 3s against Vanderbilt.
It’s not every game.
But it’s the big ones.
That’s why the nickname has stuck.
Captain Clutch.
And inside that locker room, there’s no hesitation about him.
“He’s put in the work… whenever it’s crunch time, he’s ultra confident and delivers every time,” Trent Noah said.
“Every time he shoots, I just know it’s going in,” Brayden Hawthorne added.
When Chandler gets going, it changes everything offensively.
“When he gets going… that spreads the floor for everybody else,” Jaland Lowe said.
And Chandler knows that’s part of his role.
“I think it’s important to open things up for the guys,” he said. “When I’m shooting it well… it makes it easier for everyone.”
But more than anything, it comes down to trust.
“That’s huge in those moments, having trust in the guys you’re on the floor with,” Chandler said.
And Kentucky trusts him in those moments.
This team doesn’t have a big margin.
They’re not deep. They’re not always consistent. They’re going to have stretches where things stall out.
And when that happens, everything comes down to one play.
That’s why Collin Chandler matters so much.
Not because he’s perfect.
Not because he’s consistent every night.
But because when the moment shows up, he does too.
If Kentucky is going to make a run this March, it’s probably not going to be clean.
But somewhere along the way, they’re going to need a shot that changes everything.
More and more this season, that’s been Collin Chandler.
Captain Clutch.
And if Kentucky is going to go further than expected, they’re going to need a few more of those moments from him.
