Bruce Thornton is part of a dying breed in college basketball. He's a senior who hasn't transferred. The point guard was rewarded for his loyalty Saturday when he passed Dennis Hopson as Ohio State's all-time leading scorer.
Thornton, the program's first four-time captain, came into Senior Night needing 12 points to accomplish that feat. He reached the milestone during the final minute of the first half in a 91-78 win over Indiana (18-13, 9-11 Big Ten).
He hit a pull-up 3, giving him those elusive dozen points on the day and 2,097 for his career.
He’s done it.

Thornton finished with 25 points on 7-of-9 shooting to go along with 7 assists and 3 rebounds. Ohio State (20-11, 12-8) finished the regular season on a three-game win streak.
Here's the program's updated all-time scoring leaderboard:
1) Bruce Thornton (2022-26): 2,110 points
2) Dennis Hopson (1983-87): 2,096 points
3) Herb Williams (1977-81): 2,011 points
T-4) William Buford (2008-12): 1,990 points
T-4) Jerry Lucas (1959-62): 1,990 points

Thornton has upped his scoring average every season he's played for the Buckeyes. This time around, he's posting 19.9 points per game, and he's finally on the verge of his first NCAA tournament appearance.
Ohio State hasn't made the dance since the 2021-22 season. Its three-season drought is its longest since 2002-05.
But the Buckeyes seized a much-needed Quad 1 win over then-No. 8 Purdue last Sunday and are currently KenPom's 27th-highest rated team.
For the first time in four years, they have a winning record in Big Ten play, and they have a backcourt featuring two of the country's more exciting scorers in Thornton and Juni Mobley.
Coming out of Milton High School in Georgia, Thornton was part of a 2022 Buckeyes recruiting class that ranked ninth nationally, according to the Rivals industry ranking.
That class also included forward Brice Sensabaugh, guard Roddy Gayle Jr. and center Felix Okpara. Sensabaugh was one-and-done and now plays for the Utah Jazz, who drafted him 28th overall in 2023. Gayle transferred to rival Michigan after two seasons, and, around the same time, Okpara made the move to Tennessee.
Their departures took place while Jake Diebler adjusted to his new role as head coach. Diebler took over for a fired Chris Holtmann down the stretch of the 2023-24 season and then ditched the interim tag.
Meanwhile, Thornton stayed on and has helped Diebler author a new era of Ohio State basketball. In the process, he's etched his name into program lore.
A senior point guard is a college basketball coach's best friend. One like Thornton, who hasn't switched schools, is a rarity nowadays.
His commitment is worth celebrating, and so is the prolific achievement he earned Saturday in Columbus.
