Former Cincinnati and West Virginia basketball coach Bob Huggins is dealing with a progressive cognitive condition, his family announced Wednesday, just days before he is set to be honored by the Bearcats.
Huggins’ family released a statement revealing that the condition “has begun to affect his memory and aspects of his daily life.” The family had kept the matter private for several months before deciding to share the news as Huggins prepares for his induction into the University of Cincinnati’s James P. Kelly Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday, Oct. 23.
The announcement comes as the legendary coach prepares to be recognized for his lasting impact on Cincinnati basketball, where he spent 16 seasons from 1989 to 2005.

Huggins remains the Bearcats’ all-time winningest coach, compiling 399 victories during his tenure. He led Cincinnati to 14 NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Final Four run in 1992, three Elite Eight appearances and four trips to the Sweet Sixteen. His teams also won eight conference tournament championships and 10 regular-season conference titles.
Huggins later coached at West Virginia, where he guided the Mountaineers to the 2010 Final Four and further cemented his legacy as one of college basketball’s most accomplished coaches. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022.
The upcoming Cincinnati ceremony will honor Huggins alongside other members of the university’s 50th anniversary athletics Hall of Fame class.
The news of Huggins’ diagnosis has brought a difficult personal update ahead of what should be a celebratory weekend for the former coach and the Cincinnati community.
