KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City is about to become the testing ground for the future of college basketball.
For the first time, a full LED glass basketball court will be used in official competition, and it’s happening at T-Mobile Center during next month’s Big 12 Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments.
The debut of ASB GlassFloor technology puts Kansas City at the center of a major shift in how college sports are presented, experienced and monetized, according to a news relase from the conference.
Conference leaders say the move positions both the Big 12 and Kansas City as national innovators in the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics.
“Our goal at the Big 12 is simple: keep raising the bar,” said Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark.
“This technology represents the future and bringing it to our basketball tournaments reinforces our commitment to innovation, positioning the Big 12 as a different league and national leader in elevating the game.”
The high-tech glass court, previously showcased at NBA All-Star 2024 and international competitions, allows real-time digital graphics, interactive fan games, animated replays, shot charts and dynamic branding directly beneath players’ feet.
Officials say it meets modern hardwood performance standards and has been vetted for athlete safety.
University of Kansas men’s head coach Bill Self, calling himself “an old school guy,” said even he sees it as exciting. “This is the wave of the future. I think it’ll be great,” Self said.
The Big 12 tournaments consistently rank among Kansas City’s biggest annual sporting events, and this year’s added spotlight could bring even more national attention as games air across ESPN platforms.
The conference currently boasts six Top 25 men’s teams, the most of any league, along with three top-ranked women’s programs.
The Big 12 Women’s Basketball Tournament will take place March 4-9 and the Men’s Basketball Tournament will be played March 10-14.
