For BYU to make a little run, they caught a little bit of a break by not drawing UCF or Cincinnati in a potential second round matchup. BYU first has to take care of Kansas State, and BYU has shown that without Richie they can’t overlook anyone. BYU should be a fairly sizable favorite, but Kansas State is dangerous with high-scoring guard PJ Haggerty. BYU won at Kansas State 83-73 back on January 3 in both teams Big 12 opener. The Wildcats finished the season 12-19, including 3-15 in Big 12 play. Their three wins were all at home over Utah, Baylor, and West Virginia.
With the Texas Tech win, a 6 or 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament seems like the most likely seed. A win over Kansas State and West Virginia would put BYU in a good spot for a 6 seed. Beating Houston seems like a far fetched scenario, considering Houston’s talent and BYU would be playing three games in three days versus a rested Houston team. BYU probably doesn’t want to play more than three games and would like to get out of the tournament healthy and a full week of rest before their NCAA Tournament opener on March 19.
