Overall thoughts:
The Hoyas have yet to ascend back up the Big East hierarchy since they took Ed Cooley from Providence, and I don’t see that changing this year. Despite the big upset victory over Villanova in the Big East Tourney, Georgetown will once again have to remake its team this season. On the surface, the Hoyas would seem to have a fair amount of retention, but most of that comes by the way of redshirt players and walk-on types. And while they hope to retain Vince Iwuchukwu, that situation is in limbo just like countless others across the country. That leaves only Caleb Williams and Kayvaun Mulready returning from last season’s rotation.
For the newcomers, they’re also hoping for DePaul transfer to be eligible. Gaining his services would help to replace Julius Halaifonua, who initially committed to return to Georgetown but later transferred to Oklahoma State. Kentucky (and Pittsburgh) transfer Jaland Lowe is coming off of an injury, so his health is essential to Ed Cooley’s squad having any chance of a surprise this season. The rest of the class is underwhelming, but Chol Machot’s versatility could allow Georgetown to play two big men this year (if one or both of the aforementioned players are deemed eligible).
The short of it is that Georgetown needs some eligibility situations to break its way, and even then, the talent is likely towards the bottom of the league. The Big East needs Georgetown to be relevant if it’s to ever get back to the top of college basketball, but that seems unlikely this year. The coaches have selected the Hoyas to second-to-last, only ahead of Butler.
