New Providence Friars head coach Bryan Hodgson has been on the job for about a month, and he’s made major waves in the transfer portal already. Providence had landed the commitments of six potential impact players in the transfer portal this offseason, and one of their biggest additions came on Tuesday with the the commitment of former Georgetown guard Malik Mack, as per Joe Tipton of On3.
Malik Mack spurning Georgetown for Providence is also a little significant in that Hoyas head coach Ed Cooley used to be the Friars coach before switching programs. Cooley initially recruited Mack to Georgetown after the 2023-24 Ivy League Freshman of the Year winner entered the transfer portal.
A potential NBA Draft pick, Mack’s addition gives the Friars one of the best rosters in the Big East on paper. He joins a transfer portal haul that includes guard Miles Byrd, forward Arrinten Page, guard Ryan Sabol, center Samson Aletan, guard Devin Vanterpool and guard Gavin Hightower.
Hodgson has his work cut out as far as getting the team to mesh in his first season, but they appear to a team capable of making a deep NCAA Tournament run.
Last season, Mack appeared in 34 games for Georgetown at a little over 32 minutes per game. He averaged 13.6 points, 3.0 rebounds and 4.1 assists with splits of 38.1 percent shooting from the field, 29.8 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 81.8 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
Hodgson takes over a program that failed to reach the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season. Ironically, the last time the Friars reached the Big Dance was when Cooley was still head coach.
