Tennessee has landed another top player out of the transfer portal today, earning a commitment from former VCU guard Terrence Hill Jr. The breakout sophomore star caught the national eye last month after putting up 34 points on North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament.
Now, Hill appears to be Tennessee’s answer at point guard.
The 6-3, 180 pound guard ranks as the 18th player overall in the transfer portal class, according to 247Sports. Hill averaged 15 points, 2.8 assists and 2.7 rebounds per game for VCU this season. Hill shot 37 percent from three-point range.
Billed as a combo guard, Hill hasn’t really operated as a true point guard. As things stand right now, that’s where he’ll be for Rick Barnes next season. Tennessee will likely move from a tradition point guard look (Zakai Zeigler, Ja’Kobi Gillespie) to a hybrid approach with Hill. It’s obvious that others on the roster or coming to the roster will have the ability to bring the ball up the court and get Tennessee flowing into offensive sets.
Hill joins Dai Dai Ames, Tyler Lundblade and Troy Henderson currently in the Tennessee backcourt with more to come. The Volunteers have also added Jalen Haralson, who is a candidate to run some point-forward, and rim protector Miles Rubin. A big NBA decision still looms from Nate Ament.
Tennessee now awaits a decision from prized portal guard Juke Harris, who is down to Michigan, North Carolina or the Volunteers. Harris remains in the NBA Draft, with a deadline to withdraw at the end of May. Tennessee has some momentum there after an in-home visit last weekend.
Rick Barnes is steamrolling his way to a top five roster for the 2026-27 season.
