Kentucky basketball fans are brainstorming ways to push Mark Pope’s program back to the top of college basketball, and one idea really stood out.
As the Wildcats continue to build their roster while navigating through transfer portal chaos and NBA Draft uncertainty surrounding players like Malachi Moreno, one Kentucky fan proposed a bold solution: build a major international recruiting pipeline led by an elite European basketball coach.

The idea quickly gained traction among Big Blue Nation supporters who were frustrated with Kentucky’s recent struggles.
Kentucky Fans Push For International Recruiting Revolution
In a lengthy post on On3 one Kentucky supporter argued that Pope and the Wildcats are fighting for wrong players in the modern college basketball era.
Instead of relying heavily on the transfer portal and traditional five-star recruits, the fan suggested Kentucky should aggressively target overseas talent by hiring a respected European basketball figure such as Ettore Messina.
Messina is one of the most decorated coaches in European basketball history, who currently coaches Olimpia Milano and previously worked with the San Antonio Spurs under Gregg Popovich.
According to the fan’s proposal, adding someone with Messina’s resume would instantly give Kentucky credibility in international recruiting circles.
“The next frontier is the International Pipeline. If we hired a guy like Messina, we aren’t just getting an assistant, we are opening a door to a talent pool that the rest of the SEC has barely touched. It would turn Kentucky into a “Global Academy” that bypasses the portal chaos entirely and could be a move to bring us back to the prominence we once had. To stay ahead you have to adapt and this is a must do IMO, if not Messina then a prominent Euro guy.” the post stated.
The fan also argued that NIL money now gives programs like Kentucky a major advantage over many European professional leagues when recruiting younger international players.

Pressure Continues To Build Around Mark Pope
The discussion comes during a crucial offseason for Pope and the Wildcats.
Kentucky has already added several transfers, including Zoom Diallo and Alex Wilkins, but many fans still believe the roster lacks power heading into the next season.
At the same time, uncertainty surrounding Malachi Moreno’s NBA Draft decision and Kentucky’s pursuit of Iowa State transfer Milan Momcilovic has added even more pressure to the program.
CBS Sports analysts Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander recently suggested there is still a strong chance that Moreno could return to Lexington, and that would significantly change Pope’s roster.
Still, concerns remain after Kentucky failed to make a deep NCAA Tournament run during Pope’s first two seasons in charge.
Analysts have even questioned whether Pope could begin facing serious job pressure if the Wildcats fail to contend nationally again next season.
That is why ideas like expanding internationally are resonating with fans.
The On3 post specifically pointed to Europe as an untapped market filled with highly skilled players who already understand team-oriented basketball concepts and professional systems.
Whether Kentucky actually explores something similar remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Big Blue Nation desperately wants to see the Wildcats return to the top once again.
