When Royce Parham scored to put Marquette up 8-0 with 17:33 left in the first half of Monday night’s season opener, Mercyhurst had committed three turnovers and missed their only shot attempt of the first two and a half minutes.
I think this explains this game pretty well.
There’s not really much to recap here, not when Marquette was up 15-2 in the first six minutes and Mercyhurst had already fried two of their timeouts trying to figure out what the hell they were dealing with from the Golden Eagles. The lead hit 20 for the first time on a three-pointer by Damarius Owens with 3:37 left in the first half, 32-10 Marquette. The Golden Eagles were up 36-14 at the half scoring a point per possession, but holding the Lakers to 0.39 per trip.
And then Marquette scored the first 10 points of the second half to lead by 30, 44-14.
Michael Phillips hit a three with 8:04 to go to put Marquette up 40, 67-27. The lead maxed out at 44 with 5:36 on a dunk by Royce Parham.
Everyone on the active roster played, from 23 minutes for Sananda Fru down to one minute for Braeden Brenn and Colton Crowdis. Josh Clark — no, really — is your leading scorer here, getting 18 points on 8-for-9 shooting. Fru led the squad in rebounding with 12, including seven on the offensive end as he skyed over the Mercyhurst defenders, only one of which even touched 6’9”, and that guy only played 10 minutes. Adrien Stevens had four assists to lead the Golden Eagles there, which sounds like not much, but that’s out of 23 for the team on just 29 made buckets.
Marquette finished the game scoring 1.22 points per possession and allowing just 0.67 per trip for Mercyhurst. This was so lopsided from pretty much the get-go that it really turned into being able to isolate watching individual players and get a sense of how they were doing as opposed to having to watch anything about what was going on for the entire team on the scoreboard.
Which is good for your opener.

Up Next: Marquette returns to action on Friday, and they’ll be in Milwaukee, just not at Fiserv Forum. They’ll be at the McGuire Center on campus for the every-other-year Students Only game, and Detroit Mercy will be coming to town as the opposition. Tipoff on ESPN+ is set for 7pm Central time. That game will be the season opener for the Titans, but they managed to go 1-1-1 in their three game exhibition slate. That’s a 90-80 win over Grand Valley State, a 70-70 draw with Alabama A&M, and an 82-75 loss to Wayne State.
